I feel like of all our tours this week, UCLA was the most thorough. They definitely had the largest campus of all the programs. Veronica was our guide, and she took us through about 20 rooms where students’ ideas come to life. Everything from animation bays to recording bays. UCLA’s facilities are very impressive, including their 8 hangers where students can build stages for their films. Not only is the film program impressive but the campus is absolutely beautiful. The interesting thing about UCLA is that their undergraduate program is 2 years, and their graduate program is 4 years. For David and I, we would be eligible for in-state tuition after our first year. I definitely like UCLA and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the top film programs in the nation. If you are interested in the UCLA film program, please visit the website for the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television. They have tuition fees listed for both residents and non-residents.

Today we visited the conservatory at the American Film Institute. The campus has a much smaller and secluded feel to it than some of the bigger university programs. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see much of the magic at AFI: there were students shooting in the main stage area and a workshop was being held in the main screening room. We were able to see some of the editing suites, the production staging area, and the SAG connection room. Although the campus has a tiny feel to it, it’s absolutely gorgeous. I think the thing I like about AFI the most is that they only offer an MFA, which means the students are older and more dedicated to the art of film making. For more information on AFI you can visit their website. They also tuition fees listed there.

Monday we attended the tour for the film program at USC. Shala and Lucy were our tour guides; our amazing tour guides It was a blast. The school’s architecture and faciliteis are pretty stunning. It was easy to see why USC is one of the best film schools in the nation. Although I’m pretty familiar with USC’s programs my interest was most peaked by the Interactive Media program. Apparently they are building a third building for the film school that will be completely dedicated to interactive programs. That’s pretty interesting. Shala and Lucy did a fantastic job of covering all the information I wanted and more. Kudos to them. Overall I was pretty impressed. If you are interested in the USC film program you should check out their website. They have up-to-date tuition fees listed there as well.

Some friends of mine here in Los Angeles recommended this sweet little church called Vintage. David and I checked it out this am. I must say it’s a sweet little gig. Ger, the pastor, came by and talked with David and I for about 10 minutes before we even knew he was the pastor. Super friendly. Super welcoming. Great group of believers for anybody in the LA area looking for home.

Marvel has once again struck gold with it’s latest release The Avengers. The film had a hefty budget of $220 million and has reportedly already grossed over a billion in box office sales. For those of you not familiar, this is the finale for several precursor films. The Avengers are a band of superheros destined to save mankind; all of which justified their own film leading up to this one. Ironman, Ironman 2, Hulk, Hulk 2, Thor, and Captain America were all laying the groundwork for The Avengers.

What I liked:
Robert Downy Jr. I mean who doesn’t. His character is wonderfully written, but his performance is an A+. Love the guy. Overall the film is really well written, which is surprising for a superhero movie. The dialogue is quick witted and engaging. I really enjoyed the pace and sarcasm of the all the characters picking at each other. I think the writers also did a good job of getting the characters out of their over-the-top super powers, and took them into some psychological battles, which I liked.

The Not So Great:
I can’t complain about much with The Avengers. It was interesting of all the antagonists from the precursor movies they chose Loki (Thor’s brother) to be the main bad guy. I think there were some opportunities to integrate some of the other characters from the other films. I think bringing back an Ivan Vanko or Johann Schmidt could have had an interesting angle. There was an implied love connection between Hawkeye and Agent Romanoff there never materialized to anything. As an audience we want to see these guys end the story with someone special, and Starks is the only one with a significant other.

Conclusion:

This film is doing VERY well in the box office. It’s even exceeding it’s ballooned expectations and it’s easy to see why. A stellar cast powering some well-crafted writing can be a fun night at the movies. The Avengers won’t disappoint you, trust me. Also, make sure to stick around after the credits are finished … there is a humorous team building activity worth the wait.

When I first joined the Mile High Vineyard, here in beautiful and sunny Denver, Colorado, the pastor was quick to send me Miller’s book “Searching for God Knows What.” Donald, if you are reading this, you know I love you, but that was a hard read. Although the philosophical journey of how Miller “finds God” is interesting, it’s hard to follow along. It lacks focus. Rabbit trails fork into more rabbit trails and before you know it you are lost in the subconscious of the author.

Now, I haven’t read Blue Like Jazz. I haven’t intentionally because I wanted to grade the film on a totally subjective basis, but after reading “Searching for God Knows What” I was cringing as I took my seat at the theater. Let me tell you … I was pleasantly surprised.

What I liked:
I loved all the characters with the exception of Miller’s mother and her youth-pastor lover. Miller’s college friends seemed to each have unique traits and personalities and they each handled Miller’s suppressive origin differently. I think Marshall Allman gave a stellar performance. I say that, but come on, if it’s anyone besides Kirk Cameron starring in a “christian” film I’m happy. It seems to me none of the cast has deep religious ties to the christian film industry, which I was glad to see. It’s refreshing to see fresh faces and talent on-screen working with “moral” material. Tania Raymonde‘s character (Lauryn) was likeable from “go.” Her high school picture on the cork board was clutch. I loved her attitude and the way her condescending dialogue rolled so smoothly off her tongue. I think Claire Holt (Penny) also did a good job. My favorite, by and large, was Justin Welborn (The Pope). The Pope pushing a burning grocery cart through campus is a memorable visual. One we shouldn’t forget.

The not-so great:
The animated cut sequences were subpar. The sequence with the rabbit chasing the carrot to Reed College could have had more thought put into it. The astronaut cut sequences seemed out of place. Not-so-great visuals cut into a great story are a little jarring. The biggest beef I had with the film was the climax. Every great story needs to be built around an ending, and this story didn’t have one. It’s an anti-climax climax. Miller’s friendship with his classmate “The Pope” is not even a central storyline, yet we find ourselves closing the movie with the two of them exchanging a heartfelt conversation at “confession.” The central storyline is Miller running away from his conservative and hypocritical background. The central conflict builds as he discovers his mother has become pregnant by a married youth pastor. More and more tension builds as Miller refuses to talk to his mother. Penny even saves his phone from drowning in the holy water. I think the writers should have built the end of the movie around the much more personal conflict between Miller and his mother, rather than focusing on his relationship with The Pope. A much more elegant ending to tie into the central conflict could be Miller finally answering his mother’s call with a simple “hey mom.”

Conclusion:

I really enjoyed the film. It explores the unique perspectives of being a Christian but resenting the gross actions committed by the masses tagged as “Christians.” Films like Blue Like Jazz are “thinking” films; exploratory if you will. There is no strong overarching agenda, which makes the audience’s experience much more enjoyable. Well worth your money at the box office. Find theaters that are screening Blue Like Jazz on their website.

October Baby tells the touching story of a young college girl, Hannah (Rachel Hendrix), who discovers that she is not only adopted, but was a failed abortion. After Hannah has sorted out her emotions, she decides to tag along on a road trip with her friends with the intent of finding her real mother. Along the way Hannah discovers not only more about her origin, but finds she had a twin baby brother who did not survive the abortion. The end of the movie concludes with Hannah finding her real mother tucked away in a high-rise as an attorney. When she confronts her mother her mother wants nothing to do with her. After much soul searching Hannah decides to forgive her mother with no reciprocity, and leaves her mother a touching note that says nothing more than “I forgive you.”

What’s to like:
Rachel Hendrix. She looks great on camera, and even with the overuse of slow dreamy sequences, she has a bubbly and likeable character. I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets a shot at another feature with more credibility. First time directors Andrew and Jon Erwin have put together a beautiful film. Although the characters lack credibility, the core story is touching. Shari Rigby‘s performance … wow, I could have just relived the office scene with the note over and over. Kudos. Jasmine Guy also brings a solid performance. The scene of her and Hannah talking made me remember what real acting was. You get lost in the scene and forget you are watching a movie.

The not-so-great:
Unfortunately this film is plagued with poorly written and unbelievable characters. The two that stand out the most play the largest role in Hannah’s story: her father, Jacob (played by John Schneider) and her romantic interest, Jason (played by Jason Burkey). I wasn’t too keen on Jacob’s southern authority role, and Jason was often disconnected from the people around him. I think the film could have also reworked Jason and Hannah’s “date.” There’s a bit of romantic tension built between the two before this scene, then the date climaxes at the “we almost kiss, but wait this is a christian film” moment. It’s a total tease. It’s lame, and unneeded.

Conclusion:

Despite the poor character development, October Baby is worth the watch. Especially if you are a faith-based individual, it speaks volumes to the entertainment industry to cast your vote at the box office for films like October Baby.

ps. Make sure to stick around after the credits role. Shari Rigby (Hannah’s birth mom) shares her personal experiences with abortion, which are arguably more touching than the film itself.

Brady Boyd has always been one of my favorite speakers. In fact, he knew I loved his teaching so much, he followed me to Colorado. In this little talk, Brady goes deep into his own personal struggles with insecurities. He claims insecurity is an epidemic not many will acknowledge, and I agree with him whole-heartedly. It runs rampant in our lives, and it has destroyed marriages.

Brady goes on to talk about the root cause of insecurities: You don’t believe that God is good, and that He has good things in store for you.

The two things we need to do to conquer our insecruities?

Stop fearing people

Stop fearing the future

I’ve probably listened to this sermon 8 or 9 times, and since I started listening to it in November, the Holy Spirit is constantly revealing my heart to me. Over and over again I find myself trying to control a situation because deep deep down in my heart I don’t trust Him. Once you start to learn security in the Lord you tend to not care as much, and life is just more fun. It makes you think “maybe this is the way He built us to live?”If I could talk you into listing to one sermon this year, this would be it.
